Crime-fighting takes on a different flavor when paranormal and supernatural entities get involved. In action webcomics where the protagonists are somehow tasked with taking down bad guys -- be it as bodyguards, private security or public law enforcement officials -- things can get hairy, fast, even without demons and undead running around. This edition of weekend webcomics focuses on stories where crime and chaos go hand-in-hand.

The recommendations below involve demons, undead police officers and five protagonists whose worlds are vastly different from the real world of law enforcement and private security -- but are therefore all the more intriguing.

9mm Girls by Soliko 6

9mm Girls

Business partners Hazel and Aya provide premium, professional bodyguard an surveillance services, but when they take on a job that's way more than they can chew, they're thrust into a paranormal world they didn't previously know existed. Demons attack their client and it isn't pretty -- but that's the least of their problems. If they can't adapt, they'll end up deader than a door nail.

9mm Girls by Vice and Ash, aka artistic duo Soliko 6, is an adult-oriented, crime-fighting comic with manga influences and dynamic, monochrome art. This comic is in its first chapter and already the characters have an established dynamic and unique voices that allow readers to get immersed immediately. Each update feels fresh and exciting -- and things are just barely heating up.

Patent the Sun by Alizawren

Patent the Sun

Two masked heroes, Aer and Scia, wake up in an Archdemon's castle and learn they have been created to serve as his bodyguards and protectors. They're ordered to keep the Archdemon safe no matter the cost, but as these situations are wont to do, things go awry -- fast. As Aer and Scia attempt to do their jobs and figure out who -- or what -- they are, the stakes get higher and the violence increases in ways that are seemingly unprecedented.

Patent the Sun by Alizawren/Alizarin is a supernatural comic that feels, in some ways, like a more complex and paranormal-based take on Cha Cha and Hazel from The Umbrella Academy. Alizawren's art is clean, but colorful, with tonal shifts represented through lighting and pallet changes. This comic explores sensitive themes and may not be suitable for all readers, but it's a tight, effective story with excellent world-building and utterly delightful characters.

Phantomland by Maaria

In Santa Luison, a unique force tackles the crime that plagues the city: The undead. Chie is a young rookie who's training with the baddest, meanest veteran in the force, which has its ups and downs. It's a steep learning curve, but certainly one she can handle -- as long as she pays attention and keeps her cool.

Phantomland by Maaria is a manga-style webcomic that delves deep into Santa Luison and Chie's life there, in possibly one of the most unique takes on the undead genre that exists. Maaria's art is crisp and clean, her writing equally sharp; combined, her style makes for a reading experience that's immersive and substantial. Once readers jump in, they won't want to stop -- and luckily, there's plenty of chapters to read.
