Many people believe that once a video game is released, they will always be able to play it. Sadly, that is not always the case. There are many video games that are no longer available or don’t work properly on modern hardware.

Many digital-only games vanish after they have been taken off digital stores. Quite a few older PC games don’t work on modern computers and are nowhere to be found on platforms like Steam. It’s very unfortunate, because a lot of these games are actually really good.

Here are four video games that gamers can no longer play.

Black & White

Black & White is a forgotten PC game created by Fable developer Lionhead Studios. It was one of the first video games released by Lionhead after famed game designer Peter Molyneux founded the company in the mid to late '90s.

Black & White allows players to take the role of a god that rules over the people of Eden (the world where Black & White takes place). Players can choose to be a good god and be beloved by their followers, or an evil god that is feared throughout the land.

Unfortunately, Black & White is not available on any digital platform and doesn’t work on modern PCs. Gamers would still need an older PC and a physical copy of the game in order to play it. This is unfortunate, since Black & White is often considered one of the best god games ever created. It has a pretty big following, with many people demanding it be put on digital platforms. So far, it doesn’t look like Black & White will be making a comeback anytime soon.

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World: The Game

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World: The Game built up quite the cult flowing when it first released in 2010. This cartoony, side-scrolling beat ‘em up never received a physical release, so video game fans could only get it on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 digital stores.

The game is based on the Scott Pilgrim comic book series and loosely ties in with the Scott Pilgrim Vs the World movie that released that same year. Players can choose up to four characters and fight their way through a variety of zany levels.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 stores only carried the game for four short years before taking it off in 2014. The lack of a physical release caused the game to nearly go extinct after it was pulled from stores. There has been some talk of a re-release, but nothing has been confirmed. Hopefully, Scott Pilgrim Vs the World: The Game will make a comeback sometime in the not-so-distant future.

The Movies

The Movies is yet another great Lionhead Studios game lost over time. Released in 2005, this unique business sim let players create and manage their very own movie studio. Players could make their own movies, create film stars and even win awards for their films.

The Movies had a very unique premise that won over many fans. Like Scott Pilgrim, The Movies build up a cult following and is still cherished by the few people who played it.

Steam originally carried The Movies but removed the game later on. It is also one of those games that doesn’t work on modern computers without some hardcore patching. To much disappointment from fans, The Movies has since fallen into obscurity. The game never really became a mainstream hit, so the odds of it returning to digital platforms are very slim. The fact that Lionhead Studios closed down in 2016 doesn’t give fans much hope, either. The Movies will always be remembered as a great niche game with a small but loyal fanbase.

City of Heroes

The cast of City of Heroes.

City of Heroes became one of the most popular MMORPGs when it first hit store shelves in 2004. Instead of a world full of wizards and orcs like most MMORPGs at the time, City of Heroes let gamers enter a world full of superheroes and villains.

Players could create their own unique superhero and fight crime alongside their friends. Players could even create their own superhero group like the Justice League or Superfriends. The game became an instant hit, finding fans from all over the world.

Like most good things, City of Heroes had to come to an end. The game's developer, Paragon Studios, shut down the servers for City of Heroes when it went under in 2012. There has been some talk of secret servers popping up where a loyal group of fans have been playing the game, but the chances of it being brought back officially are slim. City of Heroes will always be considered one of the best superhero MMORPGs of all time and will continue to be loved by fans around the world.

The video game industry moves at a very rapid pace. Unfortunately, some games get left behind -- and may never return, though fans will continue to hope.
