Thanks in part to his major role in Fox's X-Men series, Wolverine has remained one of the most notable superheroes in film. But now, the character (along with the rest of the X-Men) will have the ability to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There's still some question as to just how Logan will make his MCU debut, but there's one story from the comics that would serve as the perfect way to introduce the hero: "Enemy of the State."

WHAT HAPPENS IN WOLVERINE: ENEMY OF THE STATE?

Enemy of the state

Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s "Enemy of the State" begins with Wolverine being lured to Japan and being attacked by the Hand. Led by the fearsome and powerful Gorgon, the Hand are actually able to overwhelm and (if only briefly) kill Wolverine. Then, using the resurrection-based magics of their tribe, coupled with HYDRA brainwashing, Gorgon and the rest of the leaders of this unholy alliance turn Wolverine into one of their deadliest agents. Wolverine is sent across the Marvel Universe, attacking heroes like the Fantastic Four and Daredevil. Any heroes that end up being killed are then captured by the Hand and themselves turned into their living weapons, including Northstar and Elektra.

Working with the X-Men, Captain America is able to help bring down Wolverine and contain him. SHIELD then restores Logan to his normal state. Furious at how he's been turned into a weapon once more, Wolverine goes on the warpath - slaughtering his way through the armies of HYDRA and the Hand. He captures Northstar, works with a double-agent Elektra to bring down the Hand leadership and eventually finds himself dueling Gorgon to protect the life of a seriously wounded Nick Fury. In the end, Wolverine is able to defeat Gorgon and kill him by turning his powers of petrification against him and then shattering his body.

HOW ENEMY OF THE STATE WOULD BE PERFECT FOR THE MCU

Wolverine Enemy of the State 2, Wolverine Fighting Elektra in Marvel Comics

"Enemy of the State" would be a great way for the MCU to showcase just how dangerous Wolverine really is. Setting him against faceless henchmen is one thing, but pitting him against some of the most powerful heroes in the MCU. The heroes he attacks could be changed to reflect who has major roles currently in the universe. and having him almost bring down the world's mightiest heroes would establish just how fearsome he really is. Daredevil and Elektra's roles as a target could also be expanded for any film, helping bridge other characters from the Netflix Marvel shows (such as Jessica Jones and Luke Cage) into the MCU. This would have the added benefit of establishing these characters as being just as impressive as the heroes who've been appearing on the big screen.

Wolverine being seen as a brutal brawler and potential hero-killer could have an even greater impact on the MCU, too. His rampage could be seen as one of the earliest appearances of mutants in the MCU and seriously shade how people see the group. Along with Spider-Man being framed for the crimes of Mysterio, this could be seen as a catalyst for regular people to start developing anti-superpowered technologies - which could easily result in Sentinels entering the MCU. The robotic villains would make the perfect first threat for the X-Men to contend with and establish what their mission statement is, and justifying why the world seems to, at times, revolve around Wolverine.

It could also set Logan up for a redemptive arc, allowing the character to have a firm place in the MCU as someone trying to be a hero so as to make up for being used as a weapon. This would then help the MCU skip Logan's origin (which most audiences are familiar with anyway) and jump straight into Wolverine being a deadly killer trying to become a hero.
