WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Dark Nights: Death Metal #5, by Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion, FCO Plascencia & Tom Napolitano, on sale now.

One of the characters who has played a surprisingly prominent role in the crossover event Dark Nights: Death Metal is Lobo. Hired by Lex Luthor to recover the elusive Death Metal to reshape and restore the DC Multiverse, the Last Czarnian has quickly reminded everyone how brutally efficient and unapologetically brutal he truly is. As he tears a path through reality to recover the substance, the cosmic bounty hunter has brutally trounced anyone that stood in his way.

And as Lobo's role takes on an even greater level of importance ahead of the final battle against Perpetua and the Darkest Knight, it's clear that one of Lobo's most infamous defeats should have never happened: His loss to Wolverine in the intercompany crossover event Marvel vs. DC.

Published in 1996, the crossover was written by Ron Marz and Peter David and illustrated by Dan Jurgens and Claudio Castellini. In it, two cosmic brothers, one representing the Marvel Universe and one representing the DC Universe, decided to pit their universe's respective heroes against one another in a full-on contest of champions. While the creative teams selected the outcomes of six of the 11 fights, the other five were determined by reader votes, with ballots collected in advance of publication at comic book stores across the country. The match-up between Wolverine and Lobo was one of the fights that had a fan-decided outcome.

MARVEL VS DC; Lobo vs Wolverine

In the crossover, Wolverine tracked down Lobo to one of the Czarnian's usual dive bars in the far reaches of the cosmos for their duel. The two combatants' brawl quickly moved behind the bar where the actual proceedings were concealed from readers. In the end, only Logan emerged, with a lit cigar victoriously in hand, reminding both universes that he remained the best he was at what he does, especially when it wasn't very nice. While the outcome was reader-determined, the fight itself and the idea that Wolverine would triumph so easily, much less triumph at all was not without controversy among the fans.

In Death Metal, Lobo's ability to completely regenerate himself from a single drop of blood has played a surprisingly prominent role. Brainiac observed that the key to victory in saving the DC Multiverse may lay in Lobo's blood itself, with Wonder Woman later seen leading an entire platoon of Lobos created from a small sample of Lobo's blood into battle as the heroes' last-ditch effort to overthrow Perpetua and the Darkest Knight reaches its explosive climax.

Beyond Death Metal, the sequence serves as a reminder that Lobo's healing factor significantly more advanced than Logan's mutant power, as incredible as it may be. This not being the only instance the Czarnian has created an army with the same powers as himself, an idea that's been around for decades.

Marvel vs. DC had worked under the technicality that if a combatant was incapacitated for even a matter of seconds, they would lose the match-up. Despite this, Lobo has a significantly more enhanced healing factor, the ability to generate multiple versions of himself from mere drops of blood and superhuman strength and endurance on par with Superman.

Wolverine is certainly one of the most lethal heroes in the Marvel Universe and the properties of his own blood are a going concern in the Marvel Universe, but in single combat between the two, there should be no comparison. With their usual power sets, these two antiheroes aren't even in the same league. Lobo is significantly more powerful than Logan by virtually every metric, and the Czarnian's pivotal role in Death Metal shows that he should never be counted out.
