Square Enix's upcoming video game Marvel's Avengers pits such heroes as Captain America, Black Widow, the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and Hank Pym against Taskmaster and the Abomination (for starters) in a story that centers around a catastrophe in San Francisco that leads to the disbanding of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The developer has been relatively tight-lipped about what other Marvel heroes might appear, but the newly released gameplay footage may drop a significant clue.

Shown last month at Comic-Con International, but not released until this morning, the trailer suggests Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, will make an appearance. The question is whether she's merely an Easter egg or a central character.

The Footage

The extensive footage features the A-Day Prologue, with updated character animation and character designs, that introduce the game's premise and inciting conflict.

At about the 11:30 mark, the footage introduces a teen girl wearing a Captain Marvel shirt, and shouting out for "Abu" amid the chaos of the attack on the public ceremony celebrating the new Avengers headquarters in San Francisco. Abu is the affectionate name Kamala uses for her father, Yusuf Khan. She's knocked to the pavement by the panicked crowd.

We don't see the girl again until about 17:36, when a set of hands help her to her feet. Presumably, that's Abu, but it's impossible to say for sure. She certainly looks like Kamala Khan, from her hairstyle to her love of Captain Marvel.

Who's the Girl Narrating?

While this might simply be an Easter egg without any deeper meaning, it may also be much more. The beginning and ending of the footage are narrated by an unseen girl who talks about meeting the Avengers, and introduces the set-up to A-Day, as well as the fallout.

Could Kamala Khan also be the narrator? It would certainly make sense, as Kamala did meet the Avengers; they're her idols. She would be the perfect point-of-view character for the game's story.

Developed by Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix, Marvel's Avengers features Nolan North as Iron Man, Troy Baker as Bruce Banner, Laura Bailey as Black Widow, Jeff Schine as Captain America and Travis Willingham as Thor. The game is scheduled to be released on May 15, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Google Stadia.
