WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for The Gifted's two-part season finale, which debuted tonight on Fox.

The promo for the Season 1 finale of The Gifted prominently features a woman who warns Lorna Dane, "A hard time is coming for mutants," as part of a recruitment pitch for the Mutant Underground. We learn in flashback in the opening moments of the finale's second hour that she's an attorney working on behalf of the X-Men, sent to the mental institution in which Polaris was placed as an alternative to jail. But this woman, Evangeline, isn't just any lawyer.

When Lorna scoffs at the idea that she could be a leader in this new network, the attorney rolls up her sleeve and says, "You think you're the only one with demons inside you, Miss Dane?" as her hand turns red with scales, and black talons extend from her fingers. "We all have them. It's what you do with them that matters."

Although she's not seen anywhere else in the episode, the rather unorthodox attorney is only the latest in a line of relatively obscure X-Men comics characters dusted off for minor roles on The Gifted: Evangeline "Vange" Whedon, a shape-shifting member of the Mutants Rights Coalition introduced in 2003 by Chris Claremont and Salvador Larroca in X-Treme X-Men #21.

A successful prosecutor who was fired and evicted after she realized she was a mutant, Evangeline can transform into an enormous dragon when she comes into contact with blood. (Hence the red, scaly arm and talons.) Evangeline became an ally of the X-Men, and provided the team with legal help. She retained her powers following M-Day, which decimated much of the world's mutant population, and later joined many of them at the X-Men base Utopia.

The Gifted is prone to introducing characters and concepts in flashback before integrating them into the primary storyline (the Hellfire Club, the Purifiers, Sen. Montez, et al), so it's possible Evangeline will make a return in Season 2. Following the events of the finale, which left the Mutant Underground on the run and Polaris very likely Public Enemy No. 1, there's a good chance someone will need a top-notch attorney. A dragon couldn't hurt, either.
