WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Road To Empyre: The Kree/Skrull War #1 by Robbie Thompson, Javier Rodriguez, Alvaro Lopez, Mattia De Luis and  VC's Joe Caramagna, on sale now.

The Skrulls have been responsible for some of the most insidious infiltration plots in the Marvel Universe. They've even almost conquered the planet Earth, during the events of the Secret Invasion crossover. Road to Empyre: The Kree/Skull War #1 reveals the shapeshifting race has been setting up another attempt, planting groups of Skrulls across the Earth.

One such group, the Warner family, could be the seeds of a new Secret Invasion.

Who Are the Warners?

The Warners initially appear to be nothing more than your average all-American family living in Stanford, Connecticut. However, Meet the Skrulls reveals they are actually Skrulls positioned on Earth as sleeper agents, willing and able to help any future invasions. Skrull soldiers G'Iah and Klrr go undercover as Gloria and Carl and have three daughters -- Madison, Alice and Ivy. They operate as a unit and target human resources, even after the youngest -- Ivy -- is presumed dead in the field.

In reality, she'd been captured to help develop Project Blossom, an invention that can help hunt down hidden Skrulls across the planet. In the process of trying to do their duty and protect their children, Klrr is betrayed by their handler Moloth and killed -- but only after learning about Ivy's fate. The rest of the family is able to rescue her with the information Carl gleaned before his death and they kill Moloth. The Warners have since been on the run, targeting the people behind Project Blossom. Gloria suspects that most -- if not all -- of their fellow undercover Skrullls have been similarly found out and killed, meaning the Warners are all on their own on Earth -- at least, for now.

Sleeper Agents

While investigating a lab, the Warners find evidence that it belonged to Kree agents on Earth. Inside, they even find samples from the Cotati, the ancient plantlife race nearly pushed into extinction by the Kree. While Gloria tries to have Madison track down the Kree, an exhausted Ivy confides in her sister Alice that she wishes for peace to come back to the galaxy. After spending time as a prisoner of war, she wants no more part in the ongoing war. When the three are attacked by Kree agents, however, they go on the offensive and track down the Kree base of operations. Ivy continues to press her mother about the possibility of peace, especially after they overhear Hulkling reach out to the Kree with an unknown message.

Ivy tearfully forgives the Kree who helped cause the loss of their father, and she forgives their mother for raising them as soldiers. This stops her sisters from attacking the Kree, although Gloria still goes to attack the soldier. She ends up finding him with his entire family, who have been living in secret on Earth just as the Warners. In the end, Gloria can't follow through with her violent intentions and lowers her laser. Just then, a message reaches both families -- Hulkling has taken the throne and declared the Skrull and Kree a single unified empire. Also, they're coming to Earth.

What Does This Mean?

The question is where the leaves the Warners. The group has long planned to play their part in the subjugation of Earth. If Hulkling is leading his newly unified empire into battle against the Earth, then the Warners (as well as their Kree counterparts) could be crucial in stealthily attacking specific targets. They've been on Earth for a long time and have proven to be very effective saboteurs. Their established roles and experience being around humans could make them an invaluable source of information and tactics. With a new network of spies working alongside them, the Warners could easily lead a concentrated and effective attack on humanity.

It may come down to whatever cause Hulkling really has in bringing his new unified army to Earth. If he's looking to take over Earth, then the Warners will be great agents to move in the background. If the former Young Avenger is bringing the armies in an attempt to ally with humanity against some other threat, then Gloria's commitment to the old Skrull ideals might be fully challenged by a more peaceful resolution. It could even lead to further fractures in the Warner family, with Ivy wanting peace. The seeds of a new Secret Invasion could be very dangerous for Earth, or the denial of such an act could tear the Warners apart.
