Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed again, but this time by only a month. Fortunately, there are other cyberpunk themed games already available for players to explore while they wait.
These games just as cybernetic and action-packed as Cyberpunk 2077 and have plenty of customization options. They're sure to fill the void where V would have been until the game finally arrives. So, while players count down and hope for no more delays, they can keep their cyberpunk goggles out and try one of these games instead. Plus, the replayability is seemingly endless, thanks to RPG elements that make each playthrough unique.
Deus Ex
The long-standing Deus Ex franchise debuted in 2007. Deus Ex is all about man and machine in the future, as well as the political trouble caused by technological advancement. Beyond just electronics and computers, augmentation is also a major point of contention: People can alter themselves for any reason and become at least part machine.
The games take place in a somewhat dystopian future. Players control an agent assigned to deal with issues like epidemics, augmentation conflicts and more. Deus Ex is an action series, but there are plenty of RPG elements including character choices and side quests.
Shadowrun
Like Cyberpunk 2077, the Shadowrun video games are based on a tabletop RPG by the same name. The series takes place in a future with not only cybernetics, urban settings and technology, but magic and fantasy elements too.
Shadowrun features include full character creation, tactical combat and plenty of choices, as well as tons of exploration. It's a meeting between the original Fallout games and Baldur's Gate, but with the cyberpunk style. Each game has its own story to follow and takes place in different locales around the Shadowrun world. It might not be as action-packed as Cyberpunk 2077, but it has all the other elements in a hybrid package.
System Shock
System Shock debuted in 1994 and the third game is still in limbo. It did significantly well on release and still maintains a great score on platforms like Steam. A reboot of the first game is currently in the works, as well.
While System Shock is more of a FPS horror game than a RPG, it does take place in a futuristic, cyberpunk world. Players wake up in space on a ship where things have gone totally wrong, thanks to a rogue AI that installed implants on the player and their crew members. Throughout gameplay, players can choose to install more implants or spend points elsewhere, similar to the mechanics in Prey. The games walk a fine line between typical sci-fi horror and cyberpunk RPG.
Ghostrunner
Ghostrunner is a brand new, action-packed, post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk ninja game with a lot to offer. It's fast-paced and violent as players make their way through neon city streets, cutting down robots and hybrid humans alike.
Ghostrunner is not a RPG, but it has all the aesthetics of a cyberpunk game, right down to the weapons and gameplay mechanics. The goal is simple: Fight to the top of a tower to defeat Mara the Keymaster, a hardly human monster ruling the city with no regard for anyone but herself. The gameplay is fast and tough, with little leeway for failure -- despite playing a master of blades.
Dex
Dex takes a different perspective on the RPG style by going 2D. Players control an eponymous young woman living in a futuristic city run by corporations. For reasons unbeknownst to her, she becomes the target of assassins and joins up with some allies to fight the system.
Even though this game has 2D action platforming, there are plenty of choices that cover character skills, augmentations and story. Players can choose to hack through areas or go in guns blazing to test their skills. It's unusual to see a 2D game with so many gameplay options and it makes this cyberpunk-themed game stand out even among other indie titles.
