For years now, BioWare has seemingly been in a state of decline, with gamers split on whether or not the company could make a comeback with some truly great titles, or if it is living on borrowed time. Fans have been begging BioWare for years to announce a remastered version of the Mass Effect trilogy, and last month, we got just that with a trailer for Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

This announcement appeared to be a sign that the studio was finally turning things around. However, the departures of veteran employees Casey Hudson and Mark Darrah have left fans wondering about the current state and future of BioWare.

Casey Hudson is best known as the creative director of Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic and the original Mass Effect trilogy. Hudson left the company in 2014 to join Microsoft, but returned in 2017 to replace Aaryn Flynn when the creative director of Anthem stepped down. Gary McKay will take the temporary role of general manager until an official replacement is found. In a statement, Hudson said, "For me, it's been the realization that I still have tremendous energy to create, but also that I need to try something different...I know that I want to start by rediscovering my creative passion through more personal work."

Mark Darrah has been the executive director of Dragon Age since 2013, and was involved in developing the critically acclaimed Dragon Age: Inquisition. He will reportedly be replaced by Christian Dailey, the studio director of the Austin branch. In his statement, Darrah said, "The team of amazing developers on Dragon Age, make my life fuller and better...But the strength of the team is also what makes this possible. I know that Dragon Age won't just survive without me, it will thrive."

Now, many fans are worried about whether BioWare can survive losing these influential figures, both of whom have decades long histories with the team. BioWare's reputation has hit quite a few bumps in recent years, with titles like Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem receiving mixed reviews from critics and much criticism from fans. Some have even pointed to a worst-case scenario being that the company might be forced to close its doors, becoming the fifteenth development team under EA to suffer that fate.

However, along with the teaser trailer for the Legendary Edition, BioWare also hinted at the next installment in the Mass Effect franchise with some early concept art. The next Dragon Age game is also currently in development, though the title and launch window have yet to announced.

Despite fan worries, Both Hudson and Darrah have expressed confidence in the rest of the team to accomplish current and future projects without them. If so, then fans can still expect great things from BioWare. However, it will be impossible to know how these beloved franchises will fare without these studio veterans until more is revealed about these upcoming games.
