Warner Bros. and MGM have announced the release date for their upcoming Sesame Street movie starring Anne Hathaway. The musical will hit theaters in 2021.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sesame Street will arrive on Jan. 15, 2021. The movie will reportedly start shooting in June with Jonathan Krisel (Portlandia) directing. Co-starring alongside Hathaway are Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch and Cookie Monster.

Hathaway was offered the role in December 2018, with the film produced by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum). Mike Rosolio wrote the first draft of the script and Chris Galletta (Kings of Summer) wrote the most recent version.

Shawn Levy has been working on bringing Sesame Street to the big screen since 2012 when the rights were held by 20th Century Fox. When it moved to Warner Bros., Levy remained attached.

Sesame Street premiered in 1969 as a sketch comedy, animation and puppetry kids show, originally produced by the Sesame Workshop. Many of its characters were created using Jim Henson's Muppets. After airing on PBS, Sesame Street moved its first-run episodes to HBO in 2016, where they remain today.
